Cemeteries never scared Missy during the summer months. Truthfully, she enjoyed strolling around them checking out the headstones with her dog, Sheaf, from time to time in Spring as well. Yet, when the Fall months came around the crisp air set a tone in her bones that chilled the wind tone for terror. This terror arose from inside her bone marrow.
Missy would hug her covers at night with her right hand and pet her puppy with her left hand gently. Every morning in the Fall months from September through November Missy dreaded getting out of bed. The alarm clock would go off and she would be struck with an overwhelming sense of panic, anxiety, rage, stress, and sadness. Something happened to her and Sheaf that she was not able to shake off. Her biggest was remorse that Sheaf had been now dragged into it.
It started a few years back when they had been on a hike and it was dusk, further off trail they normal, got distracted on the way back checking new scents and forage. Before they realized it the sun had set and Missy and Sheaf were lost. Now it was nightfall and the two knew it was dangerous to be out there alone there was a chance to be attacked by animals. Using the tools they had, North Star, they stumbled onto a cemetery headed toward what the two thought was a house.
On the way toward the house the loud shriek that was following them and the two of them picked up speed and ran toward the house as if their life depended on it. As Missy yelled, āHelp Help!ā toward the light coming from the house; the house seemed to be moving further and further away. Missy was now in a panic; she bent down and picked up Sheaf and ran into one of the rows of headstones.
The two of them laid down. She thought to herself, āthis does not make sense, if we are running toward the house and it is not coming closer towards us, what is going on,ā not sure what happened to get so tangled in the woods. Missy took a deep breath and scanned the area. She spotted a chain link fence to the right.
Sheaf and Missy bee lined for the fence and climbed up the fence for what seems to be eternity. The fence never ended; finally, they reached the top and fell over the top into a gravel pit. Here Missy and Sheaf found they were stuck in a Groundhog Day doing the same exact cemetery fence climb day in and out every day from September to November for the rest of their lives.
